Artist Marije Bijl, who is a temporary resident in Ottawa and has a studio at the Enriched Bread Artist Studios, generously offered to obtain the rights for this documentary film to show to Ria Links subscribers and climate activists in the Ottawa area.

Marije writes: Climate change is an enormously complex and terrifying problem. I have found that, when speaking about it, most of us feel overwhelmed and unable to make any meaningful change in the whirlpool that was society even before Covid hit. I wanted to promote this film to show there are solutions being explored right now, everywhere on this planet, that may lead us to a sustainable future. And we can join!

Of course we need to help put pressure on governments to change the status quo of modern society, and this is arguably the most important action any citizen can undertake, but ordinary life is lived moment to moment, and day to day. What difference can we make in these moments, in the day to day?

What Cyril Dion and his team made is an optimistic, inspirational overview of several different grassroots initiatives in several western countries, that all try to mitigate the impact our human society has on the climate in a hands-on way, within their own communities, using the tools that they have. It shows us that small acts are not in vain and could very well lead to big changes.

In five chapters, this documentary introduces us to initiatives that try to approach agriculture, energy, economy, democracy and education in a different way. Even though the film is by now 6 years old and the climate crisis has started to unfurl itself, the possible solutions that are shown here are still very valid.

I hope you will be inspired by this film to promote, join or start similar projects where you live, and work on turning our growth and plunder-driven model around step by step. That, and to put pressure on your governments!
